A study by two leading mobile groups has found that 50% of consumers want their next mobile to provide a better mobile Internet experience.
A study by dotMobi, the organisation behind the .mobi domain names for mobile web sites, and AKQA Mobile, the mobile arm of the creative agency AKQA, has shown that half of the US and UK mobile users they surveyed want a better mobile experience with their next device.A massive 90% of the 2000 users surveyed said that they wanted to learn more about the mobile web, with 50% of users being unaware that there were specific sites optimised for use on mobile phones.
Around 86% of users expressed a desire to find out what sites they could access from their phone.
Half of consumers said that past experiences with mobile web sites had made them reluctant to want to try accessing the 'Net from their phones again.
“The results from this research signify the need for a better mobile experience, something that dotMobi is committed to making available to consumers globally,” said Amy Mischler, vice president of Identity and Brand Services at dotMobi.
“The free services that dotMobi offers – like DeviceAtlas, ready.mobi and the dotMobi Developer Forum – ensure that developers and marketers can give consumers a mobile Web experience that is useful, and complementary to the mobile lifestyle.”
Although there are various ways of leading customers to a mobile site, such as http://m.google.com or http://google.com/mobile. The dotMobi method of using a specific suffix, such as http://google.mobi, was fast becoming one of the most popular.
Said Mischler: "It's also the most widely used naming convention among the Nielsen top 10 Web sites, so consumers are learning to 'guess .mobi' when trying to find a site on a mobile phone.
"They're seeing that they’ll have a more positive Internet experience on their mobile phone anytime and anywhere. And now that more than 1 million .mobi names have been registered, the availability of rich, diverse content for mobile consumers is growing daily.”
