Twitter growing rapidly in UK

While many regard it as pointless, the UK is seeing a tremendous growth in the use of the micro-blogging service Twitter.

The social networking cum micro-blogging site Twitter has recently seen enormous growth in the UK, according to the independent analysts Hitwise.

The service, which launched in July 2006, allows you to post a short message known as a 'tweet' which is published on your Twitter home page.

The site is accessible online and via mobile services, including SMS, and has become a popular way of sharing seemingly unimportant nuggets of information about what someone is doing at a particular time.

Friends can be 'followers' and then receive tweets from their friends, allowing them to follow their every move.

News sources have also started using the service to provide their readers with updates on when new content is added to their sites.

According to Hitwise, which has access to ISP data within the UK, usage of Twitter has risen dramatically in the UK in recent months and Brits make up 70% more of Twitter's user base than those in the United States.

Hitwise reckons that UK use of Twitter has risen a wopping 631% during the past year.
