The long-awaited iPhone and iPod Touch App Store has got off to a roaring start with over 10 million downloads already.
Apple's App Store got off to a great start following its launch on Friday with a wopping 10 million in the first weekend. The App Store, which allows users of the iPhone, iPhone 3G and iPod Touch to download a wide range of software applications, launched with around 500 programs available for download, with several hundred more added in the past day or two.
Steve Jobs said: "The App Store is a grand slam, with a staggering 10 million applications downloaded in just three days. Developers have created some extraordinary applications, and the App Store can wirelessly deliver them to every iPhone or iPod Touch user instantly."
While about 25% of the 800 apps currently listed are free, the store is dominated by paid software which ranges in price from as little as 59p to as much as £49.
Many of the apps take advantage of some of the iPhone's special features, such as its Multi-Touch touchscreen interface and its accelerometer, which among other things has been put to use to allow users to steer in driving simulators simply by tilting the phone from side to side.
The App Store appears to have been a massive commercial success not only for Apple but also for those software companies lucky enough to have been among the lucky 500 whose apps were chosen to be part of the Store's launch.
Each developer who wishes to sell apps via the App Store needs to pay Apple a $99 fee, and a 25% share of the profits.
Initial estimates suggest that some companies selling the most popular apps, such as Sega's Super Monkey Ball, could have netted over $100K in the opening weekend alone.
