The iPhone 3G is showing signs of massively outselling the original first-gen iPhone as a million are sold in the first weekend alone.

In the three days since it was launched, Apple has sold over a million iPhone 3Gs.

In what Apple CEO Steve Jobs described as "a stunning opening weekend", Apple sold its millionth iPhone 3G on Sunday.

Sales of the latest Jesus phone, which now features GPS, a new plastic back and a lower price tag, as well as a faster Internet connection, are massively out-stripping those of the first generation iPhone.

Jobs said that it took 74 days for Apple to sell one million of the original iPhone, and that the 3G model was clearly off to a great start around the world.

The iPhone 3G went on sale in 21 countries including the UK, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the USA, and goes on sale in France later this week.

Unfortunately, the launch of the iPhone 3G was marred by problems in activating the devices as hundreds of thousands of users simultaneously tried to activate their 3G iPhone or upgrade their existing iPhone to the latest 2.0 firmware.

Many users were left with inoperable phones for many hours after Apple reportedly shut down access to its activation servers to minimise further problems for those attempting to activate new phones.
